Dal Sailors Place 6th at Student Yachting World Cup

This year Canada was represented at the 31st Student Yachting World Cup by Dalhousie University. The regatta took place October 21-28th, 2011. The Dalhousie team consisted of Ted Murphy, Justin Hall, Dave Castle, Valerie Keast, Hugh Goodday, Jacob Chaplin Saunders and Catherine Richards.

After a long haul getting to La Trinite-sur-Mer on the West coast of France and two days of training in the Archembeault Grand Surprise, Team Canada was disappointed as the first two days of this year’s SYWoC were blown out with gale force winds along with rain and huge swell in the racing area kept the teams from 14 countries waiting on shore. Tuesday, October 25th saw the first day of racing with four races sailed in medium breeze in the Baie de Quiberon. After dealing with equipment failure in race one Dalhousie sailed a very consistent day with finishes in the range of 5th to 7th in races two to four and redress being awarded for race one. Wednesday was another windy day with 15 knots with gusts in the high teens. Dalhousie had a difficult start to the day finishing the first race in 11th and being OCS in the second. Dal wrapped up the day with two solid fifth place finishes. Thursday was an interesting day with the first race being sailed in very solid breeze and seeing Dal finish seventh. The breeze got progressively lighter with the final downwind leg becoming a drifting match aided by the current that pushed Team Canada into the mark, the team’s position was salvaged by the fact that half of the fleet were scored OCS. Friday was the final day of racing which was sailed in light conditions with many of the teams posting very inconsistent results. Today we knew we had to be firing on all cylinders to stay ahead of the Italian team from CUS Milano. Dal sailed good first and third races finishing sixth and third respectively. The second race was our poorest of the event after a few mistakes on the beat in the light and shifty conditions.

Ultimately Dalhousie placed sixth, beating Italy by just one point. This is just the third time that Canada has been represented at the Student Yachting World Cup and equals Canada’s previous best performance by Queen’s University in 2010. Dal is once again qualified to represent Canada in the 2012 edition of the SYWoC. Next year we’ll be even better and on the prowl for a top 3 finish! Thanks to all those who made it all possible.
