The Nova Scotia Yachting Association has named the athletes to the 2009 Canada Games Sailing Team. The members were selected following a two weekend regatta which concluded June 14.
The members are Erin Rafuse, Tom Brosky, Dana Archibald, Jonathan Reid, from Halifax and Karen Filbee-Dexter and Ted Skiffington from St. Margaret's Bay.
Rafuse, who captured a bronze medal at the 2005 Canada Games in Regina, will represent the province in the Laser Radial class, and Brosky in the Laser class. Skiffington and Reid will compete in the male 29er class, and Archibald and Filbee-Dexter in the female 29er class. The 29er is a double-handed boat, while the Laser and Laser Radial are single-handed boats.
“We are sending a very strong team this year,” says Coach Mike Todd of Halifax. “Nova Scotia sailors are as competitive as any in the country and have been bringing home top finishes at national and international regattas. These athletes are now training year-round and I believe the team is in a position to achieve great success”.
The Team Manager is two-time Olympian Lisa Ross from Lunenburg.
The Canada Games sailing competition will be held August 17-22 at the Silver Fox Club in Summerside, PEI.
All the sailors race out of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
The 2009 Canada Summer Games are a national multi-sport and cultural event being held Aug. 15 – 29 in Prince Edward Island, and will feature 18 different sports.
